MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Sculpting 4-in-1 Face Contouring Palette in 20 Light, 30 Medium, 40 Tan & 50 Dark

Face sculpting is not a new thing, even though the contouring craze has been going on for a couple years now. The concepts of shade and light, volumes and planes and sculpting are rooted in the fine arts. Face sculpting and contouring products are meant to emphasize the way the light hits the face. This is what the new MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Sculpting lineup of face, brow and lip products looks to achieve.

The MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Sculpting 4-in-1 Face Contouring Palette ($54 CAD, available March 2016) comes in 4 shades - 20 (light), 30 (medium), 40 (tan), 50 (dark), in which each of the four products (matte highlight, matte contour, shimmering highlight, flesh tone/blush).

For MUFE standards, the packaging seemed poorly constructed. I don't mind the clear, plastic casing but there's a foam insert around each of the four cream products which is difficult to keep clean. Also, I opened some of the palettes to find that a few of the pans were disheveled and had fallen out of the packaging. It wasn't difficult to put them back or anything, I just found it a little weird considering the quality of packaging I would normally expect from MUFE.

Of course, what truly matters is the product inside. MUFE says that the creams feature polymers & polyester oils for blendability and pigment, synthetic & carnauba waxes with silicone coated pigments for long-lasting wear, mica for a satin finish and polymer powders for even texture and comfort on the skin.

Each shade feels like a slightly tacky cream. You'll see from the swatches that these have a gorgeous, natural, satin finish. Each shade packs a punch, which makes cream contouring seem very scary. Luckily, the products in the Pro Sculpting 4-in-1 Face Contouring Palette have great blendability, as the cream melds into the skin to yield very natural yet noticeable highlights and contours.

As someone with oily skin, I'm a little wary of putting oil-based products on my face. Luckily, these didn't accentuate my oiliness or break me out.

MUFE says the product has long-lasting 8 hour wear, however I found that all of the colours looked fresh after 4-5 hours but had fully faded after the 8 hour mark. Also, since the products are all cream, I would not suggest using them overtop a powder foundation.

Onto the swatches...

How I feel about cream contouring...

Demo-ing the MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Sculpting 4-in-1 Face Contouring Palette in 20 Light

In terms of colouring, I land awkwardly in-between 20 Light and 30 Medium. I find that I can use the blush from either palette yet the contouring shade of 30 Medium is slightly too warm, while the highlighting shades of 20 Light slightly too stark. Though, I wish I was more tan/dark so that I could pull off the stunning metallic golden highlight shades of 40 Tan and 50 Dark.

The palette comes with a pamphlet that describes how to use each of the four contour, highlight, shimmer and blush/flesh tones for 6 different face shapes (oval, round, long, square, inverted triangle and pyramid). I followed the instructions for "Oval" and it turned out really well! The planes of my face naturally defined without the harsh instagram contouring look.

Before and After with the MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Sculpting 4-in-1 Face Contouring Palette in 20 Light

Packaging woes aside, these palettes are pretty foolproof (if you can find the one that works for your skintone). The 4 shades are quite versatile, as you could use the palette for an entire natural face look. They're pigmented yet easy to blend out to a natural finish and last a decent length of time. I would highly recommend the Make Up For Ever Pro Sculpting 4-in-1 Face Contouring Palettes if you're looking to contour your face without looking harsh.
